Holly hallawell

Holly Hallawell (b. 2001) is a textile artist based in London. She specialises in hand-weaving, using the loom as her canvas. Her work is driven by our growing disconnection from the natural world and explores the interconnectedness of all life. She draws on natural phenomena in her surroundings, such as knotted roots and layered rock strata, reinterpreting them into abstract, textural tapestries. The interlacing of warp and weft allows her to translate nature's subtleties, like the branching of a root. Self-taught, she has developed a freeform, intuitive approach to weaving, moving unconfined through warp and weft to build shape and movement, while leaving areas of transparency open to light. She often works foraged materials into the weave, mixing them with linen, cotton, wool, and nettle fibres to hold something of the natural world within the cloth itself. The viewer is offered a moment of tranquillity and a space to reflect on their relationship with the environment.
